Popular Post Dr Boom
The next out of the Stoneskull box is the huge Iron Golem. I really like the "medieval mecha" aesthetics of this one. While I normally try for NMM, this guy was a bit overwhelming, particularly since my skills at steel/iron NMM is not as developed as my gold/brass. I thought I'd use it to test out the painting method I have planned for Wyrmgear - an airbrushed undercoat of Army Painter's Plate Mail Metal, followed by a Nuln Oil wash and then tinting using Drakenhof Nightshade for the iron bits, Seraphim Sepia for the bronze bits and Reikland Flesh shade for the copper parts. I know golem are supposed to be powered by magical energy, however this one has plenty of vents and holes that I couldn't resist painting hints of an internal fire. It'll mean that it can double as a steam powered construct should the need arise.

Count Urlik
Very nice! I’m curious to know if you airbrushed the base metal just for speed/efficiency, or are there other advantages? Once again, great work! 1
Evilhalfling
marvelous I love the tinted metal - so much variation. I will try this technique myself - but subbing in reaper and other washes instead. 2
Grand Slam
Splendid piece from top to bottom. I agree, this is a very interesting technique on the metals that I plan to..."pay homage to" at some point. Good call on the fiery vents...this guy seems like he would look right at home belching out black hell smoke. 1

The main reason why I use the airbrush is to ensure an even and relatively thin base coat. Brushwork always ends up a but thick for me. I'm getting into the habit of using it to set the basis for any large model. Any time benefit tends to be cancelled out by clean up time.
