Getting To Know You — May 2019

I prep minis when I have the time to hobby but don't have the time to do something else. I won't be participating in the Memorial Day Weekend painting binge. My time is already allocated to our annual anime convention and work. Most minis I've put paint on in a 24 hour period? 8. Most minis I've completed in the same 24 hour period? 8. Most minis I've completed painting (not including prep work and sealing), starting and finishing within a 24 hour period? 0.
  3. If I wasn't such a dunderhead when I'm at home and actually remembered to take the picture. I'll try to get it done tonight.

Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Pfft... DPD had informed me that my Bones would be deliverd today. While we would all be away, so I changed the delivery date to Tuesday ( Tomorrow). I got a confirmation. Guess what? This morning youngest vixen was a little late and then my Bones arrived. Lucky she was home to receive it. Plus side - when I get home my Bones are waiting for me. Down side- It is useless to change your delivery date with DPD even when they confirm this.
  7. It's been a while since I had a time slot that I could just paint for a few hours, but I think my record (achieved twice, in wildly different circumstances) is six. Most recently, four cultist monks and two Knight-types (plus a third Knight, but I'd started that one previously), painted to a decent tabletop standard over several hours. Prior to that, I ran the newest edition of Shadowrun's introductory one-shot and decided right before the game that I wanted to run it with minis. I painted six chronoscope Bones figs in less than 30 minutes. One layer of brown liner, and five different colors of drybrushing. They were... Sufficient to the purpose.

    02885 - Khalith, Mummy Lord 2.0

I like what I see, I haven't practiced OSL enough to give an advice though. Only tried it once. But to me it looks good.

Svetlana, My How You've Grown (77107)

Yeah! I think that's better; she's definitely been doing crunches, but it doesn't look like she's on a dehydration regimen anymore.
  10. Ooook after asking for some ideas on this thread, I've started adding a ball to Khalith's hand and working on it like some sort of lighting spell. As his skin was green my color choice fell on yellow, cause would probably be easier to adding OSL on his body and sandy base. Very desaturated and dark green for the projected shadows. This is turning out completely different from my initial "ancient effect" idea, and now I think i'm achieving the right colorfulness I was looking for. I'll probably make the spell more bright and some of the shadows more deep, but not too much, as the scene isn't nocturnal environment but more 5oc light. Posting the WIP cause now I've turned advice dependent So please, feel free to add critics and/or any sort of advice. Thank you for watching.

    Blah. That is all.
  14. I’ve had Liquitex gloss varnish seem to cause tackiness with Bones minis. Golden gloss varnish does not seem to have this problem. I use Lascaux matte varnish because it’s the best brush on matte varnish (applied with an airbrush) that I’ve found. Apply the matte varnish in thin layers or it can go satiny. Ron

Bones mini turning sticky after a while

I’ve had Bones varnished with Liquitex gloss varnish followed by Lascaux matte varnish sticky. A couple of applications of Golden gloss varnish (followed by the Lascaux matte) helps. I prime Bones with Stynylrez primer if I prime. Ron

    Atlantis Wood Elves 5/22

I love the look of these...they have a wildness to them.
  17. I want more normal animals. Walrus /Seal Farm Animals Cats and Dogs in sleeping/playing/sitting poses Sprue of birds sitting and flying Sprue of small lizards/frogs/turtles/snakes Plain unbridled horses/donkeys Sprue of small rats/mice/weasels/hedgehogs/rabbits Badger / raccoon/ red panda /wombat/ capibara Hippos both full and some waterline models. Giant Otters Eagles/Owls/Hawks
  18. Yeah, I thought John Carter was fairly decent too. Speaking of movies that are disliked for reasons I don't understand, watched Nutcracker and the Four Realms over the weekend. Not sure why it got so panned at release, seemed like a good children's fantasy movie to me.

Well, that was an ending. I won't say more, because I don't want to spoil things for people who haven't watched it. As a DM I would have said that was beyond a Wish's power and had you choose something else. Wish and Miracle are basically the same spell, just from different sources, and if a deity could simply use their power to Miracle another deity away they would be doing it all the time. But they don't, because they can't, and so they're reduced to waging eternal wars against each other. And even if Abraxas supposedly has the power to end magic itself, I doubt he'd allow that power to be used to end himself. Especially since he's Chaotic Evil. At best, if the group had continued to argue for it, I'd have had him distort your words and send you to some alternate reality where he didn't exist, and probably one that isn't remotely like the one you're familiar with, because one of the core tenets of Wish is "be careful what you wish for" and he's an evil deity. Or maybe he'd send you back in time to before he existed as a deity, which would have much of the same effect. I know it's a jerk move, but it's what you'd have to expect if you're asking an evil deity to commit suicide when they're offering you a favor.

    Mantic orcs

    Nice!
  25. I did some conversions to the Frostgrave females set, adding some Satuesque miniatures heads to two of them, and using the Perry miniatures French dragoon arms to give them rifles. These arms have gloves, which worked with the rest of the mini. Using the Perry arms required a bit of work with greenstuff but not too much. There is a savage worlds setting called Hope and Glory, where the victorians have had to deal with an apocalyptic ice age pushing them to cooperate more with India and involving lots of exploring frozen cities. And dinosaurs. The idea was to paint these up for that.

Bones mini turning sticky after a while

Yeah works fine, the dragon I did was also unprimed just undercoated. Works well as long as you don't thin your paints too much.

    Shipwreck golem

This is the biggest mini I've painted. Can't remember if I have shown it before. I love the idea (I think stolen from @chrispalmer or another poster) of having the Razig dark maiden banshee as a figure head for the piece. It fits exactly in place as others have shown. I lost her arm though so had to use an oathmark elf sword arm. Went through this with lots and lots of washes, then picked out the details like star fish, barrels, totems and idols, before washing washing washing again. A little bit of a water effect on the base as well, just with gloss mod podge. I really think the pieces like this show what Bones can do. This would be very expensive and fragile in metal or resin, and there is no loss of detail in the softer material.
